The soul is like a wild animal--tough, resilient, resourceful, savvy. It knows how to survive in hard places. But it is also shy. Just like a wild animal, it seeks safety in the dense underbrush. If we want to see a wild animal, we know that the last thing we should do is go crashing through the woods yelling for it to come out.
--Parker Palmer
When we attend to our own souls, we wait and watch for a glimpse of who we are at the depths to come forth. Our souls have learned to live in hiding--and the intensity and busyness of our daily life does not allow space for a soul to be seen. We wait in solitude (usually) and silence (mostly) to see if the deepest part of ourselves will dare to show up.
