Lent #14: bread to eat

John 6 48-51; 58b: I am the life-bread. Your fathers are manna in the wilderness, and they died as you know. But there is another bread that comes from heaven; if you eat this bread, you will not die.  I am the living bread that has come down from heaven to rescue those who eat it. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever. The bread that I will give breathes life into the cosmos. This bread is My flesh...
...I am not like the manna that your fathers ate and then died! If you eat this bread, your life will never end.

Manna was from God.  Yet the people died.  Manna was spiritual food as well--but spiritual food intended for sustaining the body for a physical amount of time.  The bread of Christ is spiritual food with the intention of sustaining the soul for eternity.

When we eat bread, it becomes a part of our bodies. It nourishes us, comforts us, and renews our energy.  When we "eat" Christ, Christ becomes part of our soul.  Christ nourishes us, comforts us, and renews our energy.  Christ is our sustenance.

Eating is spiritual whether it is manna or Christ.  What we eat determines our energy output, much of our health, and is connected to just practices in the world.  Most of us need to eat several times of a day in order to keep our energy levels in place.

I am wondering today about how I digest Christ on an ordinary Saturday.  As food is for the body, so Christ is for the soul. I wonder how I am seeking to sustain my spiritual energy today.
