Ears to Hear in Advent

In due course John the Baptist appeared; he proclaimed this message in the desert of Judea:  "Repent, for the kingdom of Heaven is close at hand."  This was the man spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said: A voice of one that cries in the desert, "Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight."

Today I am looking for who is proclaiming the new arrival of Christ among us. Who in my life is saying to me "Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight"? I know that these prophets are among us now, reminding us to change our ways because Christ is present and being born in new ways among us all the time.

It seems that having ears to hear these prophets around me is the way of the Lord in my life this December.   This year I am finding that Phyllis Tickle's Christmastide is a guide through the hours of the day--reminding me to keep looking and listening, to not get lost in the bustle, to stay open and alert.

This Advent Evelyn Underhill has been my prophet, reminding me of Christ's "perpetual coming" to our world and my life. She has also spoken to my heart the perfection to which we are called. Her words tell of an artist God as interested in the fine details of my heart "miniature" as in the entire "cathedral-wall fresco" of the universe.
